           LifewasverypleasantinAvonleathatsummer,althoughAnne,amidallhervacationjoys,washauntedbyasenseof“somethinggonewhichshouldbethere.”Shewouldnotadmit,eveninherinmostreflections,thatthiswascausedbyGilbert’sabsence.ButwhenshehadtowalkhomealonefromprayermeetingsandA.V.I.S.pow-wows,whileDianaandFred,andmanyothergaycouples,loiteredalongthedusky,starlitcountryroads,therewasaqueer,lonelyacheinherheartwhichshecouldnotexplainaway.Gilbertdidnotevenwritetoher,asshethoughthemighthavedone.SheknewhewrotetoDianaoccasionally,butshewouldnotinquireabouthim;andDiana,supposingthatAnneheardfromhim,volunteerednoinformation.Gilbert’smother,whowasagay,frank,light-heartedlady,butnotoverburdenedwithtact,hadaveryembarrassinghabitofaskingAnne,alwaysinapainfullydistinctvoiceandalwaysinthepresenceofacrowd,ifshehadheardfromGilbertlately.PoorAnnecouldonlyblushhorriblyandmurmur,“notverylately,”whichwastakenbyall,Mrs.Blytheincluded,tobemerelyamaidenlyevasion.

           Apartfromthis,Anneenjoyedhersummer.PriscillacameforamerryvisitinJune;and,whenshehadgone,Mr.andMrs.Irving,PaulandCharlottatheFourthcame“home”forJulyandAugust.

           EchoLodgewasthesceneofgaietiesoncemore,andtheechoesovertheriverwerekeptbusymimickingthelaughterthatrangintheoldgardenbehindthespruces.

           “MissLavendar”hadnotchanged,excepttogrowevensweeterandprettier.
