“NevermindPhilandthevioletsjustnow,Anne,”saidGilbertquietly,takingherhandinaclaspfromwhichshecouldnotfreeit.“ThereissomethingIwanttosaytoyou.”
“Oh,don’tsayit,”criedAnne,pleadingly.“Don’t—PLEASE,Gilbert.”
“Imust.Thingscan’tgoonlikethisanylonger.Anne,Iloveyou.YouknowIdo.I—Ican’ttellyouhowmuch.Willyoupromisemethatsomedayyou’llbemywife?”
“I—Ican’t,”saidAnnemiserably.“Oh,Gilbert—you—you’vespoiledeverything.”
“Don’tyoucareformeatall?”Gilbertaskedafteraverydreadfulpause,duringwhichAnnehadnotdaredtolookup.
“Not—notinthatway.Idocareagreatdealforyouasafriend.ButIdon’tloveyou,Gilbert.”
“Butcan’tyougivemesomehopethatyouwill—yet?”
