           GilbertsatdownbesideherontheboulderandheldouthisMayflowers.

           “Don’ttheseremindyouofhomeandouroldschooldaypicnics,Anne?”

           Annetookthemandburiedherfaceinthem.

           “I’minMr.SilasSloane’sbarrensthisveryminute,”shesaidrapturously.

           “Isupposeyouwillbethereinrealityinafewdays?”

           “No,notforafortnight.I’mgoingtovisitwithPhilinBolingbrokebeforeIgohome.You’llbeinAvonleabeforeIwill.”

           “No,IshallnotbeinAvonleaatallthissummer,Anne.I’vebeenofferedajobintheDailyNewsofficeandI’mgoingtotakeit.”

           “Oh,”saidAnnevaguely.ShewonderedwhatawholeAvonleasummerwouldbelikewithoutGilbert.Somehowshedidnotliketheprospect.“Well,”sheconcludedflatly,“itisagoodthingforyou,ofcourse.”
