Itaddressedmeasifourplaceswerereversed,asifallthegooddeedshadbeenmineandallthefeelingstheyhadawakenedhis.Itdweltonmybeingyoung,andhepasttheprimeoflife;onhishavingattainedaripeage,whileIwasachild;onhiswritingtomewithasilveredhead,andknowingallthissowellastosetitinfullbeforemeformaturedeliberation.IttoldmethatIwouldgainnothingbysuchamarriageandlosenothingbyrejectingit,fornonewrelationcouldenhancethetendernessinwhichheheldme,andwhatevermydecisionwas,hewascertainitwouldberight.Buthehadconsideredthisstepanewsinceourlateconfidenceandhaddecidedontakingit,ifitonlyservedtoshowmethroughonepoorinstancethatthewholeworldwouldreadilyunitetofalsifythesternpredictionofmychildhood.IwasthelasttoknowwhathappinessIcouldbestowuponhim,butofthathesaidnomore,forIwasalwaystorememberthatIowedhimnothingandthathewasmydebtor,andforverymuch.Hehadoftenthoughtofourfuture,andforeseeingthatthetimemustcome,andfearingthatitmightcomesoon,whenAda(nowverynearlyofage)wouldleaveus,andwhenourpresentmodeoflifemustbebrokenup,hadbecomeaccustomedtoreflectonthisproposal.Thushemadeit.
