Swills,acomicvocalistprofessionallyengagedbyMr.J.G.Bogsby,hashimselfstatedtoourreporterthathementionedtoMissM.Melvilleson,aladyofsomepretensionstomusicalability,likewiseengagedbyMr.J.G.BogsbytosingataseriesofconcertscalledHarmonicAssemblies,orMeetings,whichitwouldappearareheldattheSol’sArmsunderMr.Bogsby’sdirectionpursuanttotheActofGeorgetheSecond,thathe(Mr.Swills)foundhisvoiceseriouslyaffectedbytheimpurestateoftheatmosphere,hisjocoseexpressionatthetimebeingthathewaslikeanemptypost-office,forhehadn’tasinglenoteinhim.HowthisaccountofMr.SwillsisentirelycorroboratedbytwointelligentmarriedfemalesresidinginthesamecourtandknownrespectivelybythenamesofMrs.PiperandMrs.Perkins,bothofwhomobservedthefoetideffluviaandregardedthemasbeingemittedfromthepremisesintheoccupationofKrook,theunfortunatedeceased.Allthisandagreatdealmorethetwogentlemenwhohaveformedanamicablepartnershipinthemelancholycatastrophewritedownonthespot;andtheboypopulationofthecourt(outofbedinamoment)swarmuptheshuttersoftheSol’sArmsparlour,tobeholdthetopsoftheirheadswhiletheyareaboutit.Thewholecourt,adultaswellasboy,issleeplessforthatnight,andcandonothingbutwrapupitsmanyheads,andtalkoftheill-fatedhouse,andlookatit.MissFlitehasbeenbravelyrescuedfromherchamber,asifitwereinflames,andaccommodatedwithabedattheSol’sArms.
