ThenwouldIshowTomhowthesepeopleofolddayshadbeenbroughtbacktolifeonearth,onlythatwemightknowourhopetoberestoredtoheaven!ButofallthevarioustimestherewereinCharley’sillness,therewasnotonewhenshelostthegentlequalitiesIhavespokenof.Andthereweremany,manywhenIthoughtinthenightofthelasthighbeliefinthewatchingangel,andthelasthighertrustinGod,onthepartofherpoordespisedfather.AndCharleydidnotdie.Sheflutteringlyandslowlyturnedthedangerouspoint,afterlonglingeringthere,andthenbegantomend.Thehopethatneverhadbeengiven,fromthefirst,ofCharleybeinginoutwardappearanceCharleyanymoresoonbegantobeencouraged;andeventhatprospered,andIsawhergrowingintoheroldchildishlikenessagain.ItwasagreatmorningwhenIcouldtellAdaallthisasshestoodoutinthegarden;anditwasagreateveningwhenCharleyandIatlasttookteatogetherinthenextroom.Butonthatsameevening,IfeltthatIwasstrickencold.Happilyforbothofus,itwasnotuntilCharleywassafeinbedagainandplacidlyasleepthatIbegantothinkthecontagionofherillnesswasuponme.IhadbeenableeasilytohidewhatIfeltattea-time,butIwaspastthatalreadynow,andIknewthatIwasrapidlyfollowinginCharley’ssteps.Iwaswellenough,however,tobeupearlyinthemorning,andtoreturnmydarling’scheerfulblessingfromthegarden,andtotalkwithheraslongasusual.
