           IbelievethatnothingbelongingtothefamilywhichithadbeenpossibletobreakwasunbrokenatthetimeofthosepreparationsforCaddy’smarriage,thatnothingwhichithadbeenpossibletospoilinanywaywasunspoilt,andthatnodomesticobjectwhichwascapableofcollectingdirt,fromadearchild’skneetothedoor-plate,waswithoutasmuchdirtascouldwellaccumulateuponit.PoorMr.Jellyby,whoveryseldomspokeandalmostalwayssatwhenhewasathomewithhisheadagainstthewall,becameinterestedwhenhesawthatCaddyandIwereattemptingtoestablishsomeorderamongallthiswasteandruinandtookoffhiscoattohelp.Butsuchwonderfulthingscametumblingoutoftheclosetswhentheywereopenedbitsofmouldypie,sourbottles,Mrs.Jellyby’scaps,letters,tea,forks,oddbootsandshoesofchildren,firewood,wafers,saucepan-lids,dampsugarinoddsandendsofpaperbags,footstools,blackleadbrushes,bread,Mrs.Jellyby’sbonnets,bookswithbutterstickingtothebinding,gutteredcandleendsputoutbybeingturnedupsidedowninbrokencandlesticks,nutshells,headsandtailsofshrimps,dinner-mats,gloves,coffee-grounds,umbrellasthathelookedfrightened,andleftoffagain.Buthecameregularlyeveryeveningandsatwithouthiscoat,withhisheadagainstthewall,asthoughhewouldhavehelpedusifhehadknownhow."PoorPa!"saidCaddytomeonthenightbeforethegreatday,whenwereallyhadgotthingsalittletorights."Itseemsunkindtoleavehim,Esther.
