Wehadnomorepurchasestomakenow;Ihadcompletedallhispackingearlyintheafternoon;andourtimewasdisengageduntilnight,whenhewastogotoLiverpoolforHolyhead.JarndyceandJarndycebeingagainexpectedtocomeonthatday,Richardproposedtomethatweshouldgodowntothecourtandhearwhatpassed.Asitwashislastday,andhewaseagertogo,andIhadneverbeenthere,IgavemyconsentandwewalkeddowntoWestminster,wherethecourtwasthensitting.WebeguiledthewaywitharrangementsconcerningthelettersthatRichardwastowritetomeandthelettersthatIwastowritetohimandwithagreatmanyhopefulprojects.Myguardianknewwhereweweregoingandthereforewasnotwithus.Whenwecametothecourt,therewastheLordChancellor—thesamewhomIhadseeninhisprivateroominLincoln’sInn—sittingingreatstateandgravityonthebench,withthemaceandsealsonaredtablebelowhimandanimmenseflatnosegay,likealittlegarden,whichscentedthewholecourt.Belowthetable,again,wasalongrowofsolicitors,withbundlesofpapersonthemattingattheirfeet;andthentherewerethegentlemenofthebarinwigsandgowns—someawakeandsomeasleep,andonetalking,andnobodypayingmuchattentiontowhathesaid.TheLordChancellorleanedbackinhisveryeasychairwithhiselbowonthecushionedarmandhisforeheadrestingonhishand;someofthosewhowerepresentdozed;somereadthenewspapers;somewalkedaboutorwhisperedingroups:allseemedperfectlyattheirease,bynomeansinahurry,veryunconcerned,andextremelycomfortable.
