TheysaidIwassogentle,butIamsureTHEYwere!IoftenthoughtoftheresolutionIhadmadeonmybirthdaytotrytobeindustrious,contented,andtrue-heartedandtodosomegoodtosomeoneandwinsomeloveifIcould;andindeed,indeed,Ifeltalmostashamedtohavedonesolittleandhavewonsomuch.IpassedatGreenleafsixhappy,quietyears.Ineversawinanyfacethere,thankheaven,onmybirthday,thatitwouldhavebeenbetterifIhadneverbeenborn.Whenthedaycameround,itbroughtmesomanytokensofaffectionateremembrancethatmyroomwasbeautifulwiththemfromNewYear’sDaytoChristmas.InthosesixyearsIhadneverbeenawayexceptonvisitsatholidaytimeintheneighbourhood.AfterthefirstsixmonthsorsoIhadtakenMissDonny’sadviceinreferencetotheproprietyofwritingtoMr.KengetosaythatIwashappyandgrateful,andwithherapprovalIhadwrittensuchaletter.Ihadreceivedaformalansweracknowledgingitsreceiptandsaying,"Wenotethecontentsthereof,whichshallbedulycommunicatedtoourclient."AfterthatIsometimesheardMissDonnyandhersistermentionhowregularmyaccountswerepaid,andabouttwiceayearIventuredtowriteasimilarletter.Ialwaysreceivedbyreturnofpostexactlythesameanswerinthesameroundhand,withthesignatureofKengeandCarboyinanotherwriting,whichIsupposedtobeMr.Kenge’s.Itseemssocurioustometobeobligedtowriteallthisaboutmyself!AsifthisnarrativewerethenarrativeofMYlife!Butmylittlebodywillsoonfallintothebackgroundnow.
