Atothertimeshewouldbewritingorreadingpapersinthecauseatthattableofhis,socoveredwithpapers,whichwasneverdisturbed.SometimesIwouldcomeuponhimlingeringatthedoorofMr.Vholes’soffice.SometimesIwouldmeethimintheneighbourhoodloungingaboutandbitinghisnails.IoftenmethimwanderinginLincoln’sInn,neartheplacewhereIhadfirstseenhim,ohhowdifferent,howdifferent!ThatthemoneyAdabroughthimwasmeltingawaywiththecandlesIusedtoseeburningafterdarkinMr.Vholes’sofficeIknewverywell.Itwasnotalargeamountinthebeginning,hehadmarriedindebt,andIcouldnotfailtounderstand,bythistime,whatwasmeantbyMr.Vholes’sshoulderbeingatthewheel—asIstillhearditwas.Mydearmadethebestofhousekeepersandtriedhardtosave,butIknewthattheyweregettingpoorerandpoorereveryday.Sheshoneinthemiserablecornerlikeabeautifulstar.Sheadornedandgraceditsothatitbecameanotherplace.Palerthanshehadbeenathome,andalittlequieterthanIhadthoughtnaturalwhenshewasyetsocheerfulandhopeful,herfacewassounshadowedthatIhalfbelievedshewasblindedbyherloveforRichardtohisruinouscareer.IwentonedaytodinewiththemwhileIwasunderthisimpression.AsIturnedintoSymond’sInn,ImetlittleMissFlitecomingout.ShehadbeentomakeastatelycalluponthewardsinJarndyce,asshestillcalledthem,andhadderivedthehighestgratificationfromthatceremony.
