ButmyminddweltsomuchupontheuncongenialsceneinwhichIhadlefther,andIpictureditassuchanovershadowedstony-heartedone,andIsolongedtobenearherandtakingsomesortofcareofher,thatIdeterminedtogobackintheeveningonlytolookupatherwindows.Itwasfoolish,Idaresay,butitdidnotthenseematallsotome,anditdoesnotseemquitesoevennow.ItookCharleyintomyconfidence,andwewentoutatdusk.Itwasdarkwhenwecametothenewstrangehomeofmydeargirl,andtherewasalightbehindtheyellowblinds.Wewalkedpastcautiouslythreeorfourtimes,lookingup,andnarrowlymissedencounteringMr.Vholes,whocameoutofhisofficewhilewewerethereandturnedhisheadtolookuptoobeforegoinghome.Thesightofhislankblackfigureandthelonesomeairofthatnookinthedarkwerefavourabletothestateofmymind.Ithoughtoftheyouthandloveandbeautyofmydeargirl,shutupinsuchanill-assortedrefuge,almostasifitwereacruelplace.Itwasverysolitaryandverydull,andIdidnotdoubtthatImightsafelystealupstairs.IleftCharleybelowandwentupwithalightfoot,notdistressedbyanyglarefromthefeebleoillanternsontheway.Ilistenedforafewmoments,andinthemustyrottingsilenceofthehousebelievedthatIcouldhearthemurmuroftheiryoungvoices.Iputmylipstothehearse-likepanelofthedoorasakissformydearandcamequietlydownagain,thinkingthatoneofthesedaysIwouldconfesstothevisit.
