Therewereoneortwoobservationsthatwemade,however,andthesewereasfollows:
Wesawthat,whilemanyofthelargefruit-bearingtreesgrewonlyinthevalleys,andsomeofthemonlynearthebanksofthestreams,wherethesoilwaspeculiarlyrich,thecocoa-nutpalmgrewineveryplacewhatsoever—notonlyonthehillsides,butalsoontheseashore,andeven,ashasbeenalreadystated,onthecoralreefitself,wherethesoil,ifwemayusethename,wasnothingbetterthanloosesandmingledwithbrokenshellsandcoralrock.Soneartothesea,too,didthisusefultreegrow,thatinmanyplacesitsrootswerewashedbythesprayfromthebreakers.Yetwefoundthetreesgrowingthusonthesandstobequiteasluxuriantasthosegrowinginthevalleys,andthefruitasgoodandrefreshingalso.Besidesthis,Inoticedthatonthesummitofthehighmountain,whichweoncemoreascendedatadifferentpointfromourfirstascent,werefoundabundanceofshellsandbrokencoralformations,which,JackandIagreed,provedeitherthatthisislandmusthaveoncebeenunderthesea,orthattheseamustoncehavebeenabovetheisland:inotherwords,thatasshellsandcoralcouldnotpossiblyclimbtothemountain-top,theymusthavebeenwasheduponitwhilethemountain-topwasonalevelwiththesea.Weponderedthisverymuch;andweputtoourselvesthequestion,"Whatraisedtheislandtoitspresentheightabovethesea?"Buttothiswecouldbynomeansgivetoourselvesasatisfactoryreply.
