WewereabouttocommencetheexplorationofthisvalleywhenPeterkinstoppedus,anddirectedourattentiontoaveryremarkableappearanceinadvancealongtheshore.
"What’syon,thinkyou?"saidhe,levellinghisspearasifheexpectedanimmediateattackfromtheobjectinquestion,thoughitwasfullhalf-a-miledistant.
Ashespoke,thereappearedawhitecolumnabovetherocks,asifofsteamorspray.Itroseupwardstoaheightofseveralfeet,andthendisappeared.Hadthisbeennearthesea,wewouldnothavebeensogreatlysurprised,asitmightinthatcasehavebeenthesurf,foratthispartofthecoastthecoralreefapproachedsoneartotheislandthatinsomepartsitalmostjoinedit.Therewas,therefore,nolagoonbetween,andtheheavysurfoftheoceanbeatalmostuptotherocks.Butthiswhitecolumnappearedaboutfiftyyardsinland.Therocksattheplacewererugged,andtheystretchedacrossthesandybeachintothesea.Scarcehadweceasedexpressingoursurpriseatthissightwhenanothercolumnflewupwardsforafewseconds,notfarfromthespotwherethefirsthadbeenseen,anddisappeared;andso,atlong,irregularintervals,thesestrangesightsrecurred.Wewerenowquitesurethatthecolumnswerewatery,orcomposedofspray;butwhatcausedthemwecouldnotguess,sowedeterminedtogoandsee.
Inafewminuteswegainedthespot,whichwasveryruggedandprecipitous,and,moreover,quitedampwiththefallingofthespray.Wehadmuchadotopassoverdry-shod.Theground,also,wasfullofholeshereandthere.
