Havingnowgotourselvesintoaverycomfortablecondition,webegantotalkofaprojectwhichwehadlonghadincontemplation—namely,totravelentirelyroundtheisland,inorder,first,toascertainwhetheritcontainedanyotherproductionswhichmightbeusefultous;and,second,toseewhethertheremightbeanyplacemoreconvenientandsuitableforourpermanentresidencethanthatonwhichwewerenowencamped.Notthatwewereinanydegreedissatisfiedwithit.Onthecontrary,weentertainedquiteahome-feelingtoourboweranditsneighbourhood;butifabetterplacedidexist,therewasnoreasonwhyweshouldnotmakeuseofit.Atanyrate,itwouldbewelltoknowofitsexistence.
Wehadmuchearnesttalkoverthismatter.ButJackproposedthat,beforeundertakingsuchanexcursion,weshouldsupplyourselveswithgooddefensivearms;for,asweintendednotonlytogoroundalltheshore,buttodescendmostofthevalleys,beforereturninghome,weshouldbelikelytomeetinwith—hewouldnotsaydangers—butatleastwitheverythingthatexistedontheisland,whateverthatmightbe.
