Duringtheseexcursionsofourstothebottomoftheseawebegantogetaninsightintothemannersandcustomsofitsinhabitants,andtomakediscoveriesofwonderfulthings,thelikeofwhichweneverbeforeconceived.Amongotherthings,weweredeeplyinterestedwiththeoperationsofthelittlecoralinsect,which,IwasinformedbyJack,issupposedtohaveentirelyconstructedmanyofthenumerousislandsinthePacificOcean.Andcertainly,whenweconsideredthegreatreefwhichtheseinsectshadformedroundtheislandonwhichwewerecast,andobservedtheirceaselessactivityinbuildingtheirmyriadcells,itdidatfirstseemasifthismightbetrue;butthen,again,whenIlookedatthemountainsoftheisland,andreflectedthattherewerethousandsofsuch(manyofthemmuchhigher)intheSouthSeas,Idoubtedthattheremustbesomemistakehere.Butmoreofthishereafter.
Ialsobecamemuchtakenupwiththemannersandappearanceoftheanemones,andstarfish,andcrabs,andsea-urchins,andsuch-likecreatures;andwasnotcontentwithwatchingthoseIsawduringmydivesintheWaterGarden,butImustneedsscoopoutaholeinthecoralrockclosetoit,whichIfilledwithsaltwater,andstockedwithsundryspecimensofanemonesandshell-fish,inordertowatchmorecloselyhowtheywereinthehabitofpassingtheirtime.Ourburning-glass,also,nowbecameagreattreasuretome,asitenabledmetomagnify,andsotoperceivemoreclearly,theformsandactionsofthesecuriouscreaturesofthedeep.
