Butthesurfwassohighthattheboatcouldnotlandme;sowithnothingonbutmytrousersandshirt,andwithafewcatechismsandaBible,besidessomeportionsoftheScripturetranslatedintotheMangotongue,Isprangintothesea,andswamashoreonthecrestofabreaker.Iwasinstantlydraggedupthebeachbythenatives;who,onfindingIhadnothingworthhavinguponme,letmealone.Ithenmadesignstomyfriendsintheshiptoleaveme,whichtheydid.Atfirstthenativeslistenedtomeinsilence,butlaughedatwhatIsaidwhileIpreachedtheGospelofourblessedSaviourJesusChristtothem.Afterwardstheytreatedmeill,sometimes;butIpersevered,andcontinuedtodwellamongthem,anddispute,andexhortthemtogiveuptheirsinfulwaysoflife,burntheiridols,andcometoJesus.
"AboutamonthafterIlanded,Iheardthatthechiefwasdead.Hewasthefatherofthepresentchief,whoisnowamostconsistentmemberoftheChurch.Itisacustomherethatwhenachiefdieshiswivesarestrangledandburiedwithhim.Knowingthis,Ihastenedtohishousetoendeavourtopreventsuchcrueltyifpossible.WhenIarrived,Ifoundtwoofthewiveshadalreadybeenkilled,whileanotherwasintheactofbeingstrangled.Ipleadedhardforher,butitwastoolate;shewasalreadydead.
