Abouttenyardsfartheron,thefelledtreesbecamemorenumerous,andthetrack,divergingtotheright,followedforashortspacethebanksofastream.Suddenlywecametoaspotwhereoncemusthavebeenarudebridge,thestonesofwhichwerescatteredinthestream,andthoseoneachbankentirelycoveredoverwithmoss.Insilentsurpriseandexpectancywecontinuedtoadvance,andafewyardsfartheron,beheld,undertheshelterofsomebread-fruittrees,asmallhutorcottage.Icannothopetoconveytomyreadersaverycorrectideaofthefeelingsthataffectedusonwitnessingthisunexpectedsight.Westoodforalongtimeinsilentwonder,fortherewasadeepandmostmelancholystillnessabouttheplacethatquiteoverpoweredus;andwhenwedidatlengthspeak,itwasinsubduedwhispers,asifweweresurroundedbysomeawfulorsupernaturalinfluence.EvenPeterkin’svoice,usuallysoquickandlivelyonalloccasions,washushednow;fortherewasadrearinessaboutthissilent,lonely,uninhabitedcottage—sostrangeinitsappearance,sofarawayfromtheusualdwellingsofman,soold,decayed,anddesertedinitsaspectthatfelluponourspiritslikeathickcloud,andblottedoutaswithapallthecheerfulsunshinethathadfilledussincethecommencementofourtourroundtheisland.
