           ItrubbeditsheadagainstPeterkin’scheek,lickedhischin,andthrustitsheadalmostviolentlyintohisneck,whileitpurredmoreloudlythanIeverheardacatpurrbefore,andappearedtobesomuchoverpoweredbyitsfeelingsthatitoccasionallymewedandpurredalmostinthesamebreath.Suchdemonstrationsofjoyandaffectionledusatoncetoconcludethatthispoorcatmusthaveknownmanbefore,andweconjecturedthatithadbeenlefteitheraccidentallyorbydesignontheislandmanyyearsago,andwasnowevincingitsextremejoyatmeetingoncemorewithhumanbeings.Whilewewerefondlingthecatandtalkingaboutit,Jackglancedroundtheopenspaceinthemidstofwhichwestood.

           Wenowturnedtoexaminethese,andwithoutdoubtwefoundtreesthathadbeencutdownhereandthere,alsostumpsandbrokenbranchesallofwhich,however,werecompletelycoveredoverwithmoss,andboreevidenceofhavingbeeninthisconditionforsomeyears.Nohumanfootprintsweretobeseeneitheronthetrackoramongthebushes,butthoseofthecatwerefoundeverywhere.Wenowdeterminedtofollowupthetrackasfarasitwent,andPeterkinputthecatdown;butitseemedtobesoweak,andmewedsoverypitifully,thathetookitupagainandcarrieditinhisarms,whereinafewminutesitfellsoundasleep.
