BetweenMountIkirangiwhichwaslefttotheright,andMountHardywhosesummitroseonthelefttoaheightof3,700feet,thejourneywasverytrying;forabouttenmilesthebushwasatangleof"supple-jack,"akindofflexiblerope,appropriatelycalled"stifling-creeper,"thatcaughtthefeetateverystep.Fortwodays,theyhadtocuttheirwaywithanaxthroughthisthousand-headedhydra.Huntingbecameimpossible,andthesportsmenfailedintheiraccustomedtribute.Theprovisionswerealmostexhausted,andtherewasnomeansofrenewingthem;theirthirstwasincreasingbyfatigue,andtherewasnowaterwherewithtoquenchit.
ThesufferingsofGlenarvanandhispartybecameterrible,andforthefirsttimetheirmoralenergythreatenedtogiveway.Theynolongerwalked,theydraggedthemselvesalong,soullessbodies,animatedonlybytheinstinctofself-preservationwhichsurviveseveryotherfeeling,andinthismelancholyplighttheyreachedPointLottinontheshoresofthePacific.
