           Thetwofaithfulguardianskeptclosewatch,bearingphilosophicallytherainandwindthatbeatontheirfaces.Theytriedtopiercethroughthedarknesssofavorabletoambushes,fornothingcouldbeheardbutthenoiseofthetempest,thesoughofthewind,therattlingbranches,fallingtrees,androaringoftheunchainedwaters.

           Attimesthewindwouldceaseforafewmoments,asiftotakebreath.NothingwasaudiblebutthemoanoftheSnowyRiver,asitflowedbetweenthemotionlessreedsandthedarkcurtainofgumtrees.Thesilenceseemeddeeperinthesemomentarylulls,andtheMajorandJohnMangleslistenedattentively.

           Duringoneofthesecalmsasharpwhistlereachedthem.JohnMangleswenthurriedlyuptotheMajor."Youheardthat?"heasked.

           "Yes,"saidMcNabbs."Isitmanorbeast?"

           "Aman,"repliedJohnMangles.

           Andthenbothlistened.Themysteriouswhistlewasrepeated,andansweredbyakindofreport,butalmostindistinguishable,forthestormwasragingwithrenewedviolence.McNabbsandJohnManglescouldnothearthemselvesspeak.Theywentforcomfortundertheshelterofthewagon.

           AtthismomenttheleathercurtainswereraisedandGlenarvanrejoinedhistwocompanions.Hetoohadheardthisill-bodingwhistle,andthereportwhichechoedunderthetilt."Whichwaywasit?"askedhe.

           "There,"saidJohn,pointingtothedarktrackinthedirectiontakenbyMulrady.
