Thepassengersandsailorsontheyachtwerewatchingalltheanimal’smovementswiththeliveliestinterest. Thisendedthebusiness,fortherewasnolongeranyfearoftheshark. But,thoughthesailors’vengeancewassatisfied,theircuriositywasnot; theyknewthebrutehadnoverydelicateappetite,andthecontentsofhisstomachmightbeworthinvestigation. Thisisthecommonpracticeonallshipswhenasharkiscaptured, butLadyGlenarvandeclinedtobepresentatsuchadisgustingexploration,andwithdrewtothecabinagain. Thefishwasstillbreathing; itmeasuredtenfeetinlength,andweighedmorethansixhundredpounds. Thiswasnothingextraordinary,forthoughthehammer-headedsharkisnotclassedamongthemostgiganticofthespecies,itisalwaysreckonedamongthemostformidable.
Thehugebrutewassoonrippedupinaveryunceremoniousfashion. Thehookhadfixedrightinthestomach,whichwasfoundtobeabsolutelyempty,andthedisappointedsailorswerejustgoingtothrowtheremainsoverboard,whentheboatswain’sattentionwasattractedbysomelargeobjectstickingfastinoneoftheviscera.
