M.Viotpresentedhissubjects,thetwomulattoes.Theycomposedthewholelivingpopulationoftheisland,exceptafewwildboarsintheinteriorandmyriadsofpenguins.Thelittlehousewherethethreesolitarymenlivedwasintheheartofanaturalbayonthesoutheast,formedbythecrumblingawayofaportionofthemountain.
Twiceoverintheearlypartofthecentury,AmsterdamIslandbecamethecountryofdesertedsailors,providentiallysavedfrommiseryanddeath;butsincetheseeventsnovesselhadbeenlostonitscoast.Hadanyshipwreckoccurred,somefragmentsmusthavebeenthrownonthesandyshore,andanypoorsufferersfromitwouldhavefoundtheirwaytoM.Viot’sfishing-huts.Theoldmanhadbeenlongontheisland,andhadneverbeencalledupontoexercisesuchhospitality.OftheBritanniaandCaptainGrantheknewnothing,buthewascertainthatthedisasterhadnothappenedonAmsterdamIsland,norontheisletcalledSt.Paul,forwhalersandfishing-vesselswentthereconstantly,andmusthaveheardofit.
