           ButGlenarvankeptwatch.Therewasstillastiffbreezeofwind,andtheoceanhadnotrecovereditsequilibriumaftertherecentstorm.Thewaves,atalltimestumultuous,nowbrokeoverthesand-bankswithanoiselikethunder.Glenarvancouldnotrest,knowingtheDuncanwassonearhim.Astosupposingshehadnotarrivedattheappointedrendezvous,thatwasoutofthequestion.GlenarvanhadlefttheBayofTalcahuanoonthe14thofOctober,andarrivedontheshoresoftheAtlanticonthe12thofNovember.HehadtakenthirtydaystocrossChili,theCordilleras,thePampas,andtheArgentineplains,givingtheDuncanampletimetodoubleCapeHorn,andarriveontheoppositeside.Forsuchafastrunnertherewerenoimpediments.Certainlythestormhadbeenveryviolent,anditsfurymusthavebeenterribleonsuchavastbattlefieldastheAtlantic,buttheyachtwasagoodship,andthecaptainwasagoodsailor.Hewasboundtobethere,andhewouldbethere.

           Thesereflections,however,didnotcalmGlenarvan.
