           Buttheapproachofthegreatphenomenaofnatureexcitesvagueuneasinessintheheartofeverysentientbeing,eveninthemoststrong-minded.ThewholepartyintheOMBUfeltagitatedandoppressed,andnotoneofthemcouldclosehiseyes.Thefirstpealofthunderfoundthemwideawake.Itoccurredabout11P.M.,andsoundedlikeadistantrolling.Glenarvanventuredtocreepoutoftheshelteringfoliage,andmadehiswaytotheextremityofthehorizontalbranchtotakealookround.

           Thedeepblacknessofthenightwasalreadyscarifiedwithsharpbrightlines,whichwerereflectedbackbythewaterwithunerringexactness.Thecloudshadrentinmanyparts,butnoiselessly,likesomesoftcottonmaterial.Afterattentivelyobservingboththezenithandhorizon,Glenarvanwentbacktothecenterofthetrunk.
