           LimpidRIOSintersectedtheseplains,andlostthemselvesamongthetallgrasses.Thegroundhadoncemorebecomeadeadlevel,thelastmountainsofthePampaswerepassed,andalongcarpetofverdureunrolleditselfoverthemonotonousprairiebeneaththehorses’tread.

           Hithertotheweatherhadbeenfine,butto-daytheskypresentedanythingbutareassuringappearance.Theheavyvapors,generatedbythehightemperatureoftheprecedingdays,hunginthickclouds,whicherelongwouldemptythemselvesintorrentsofrain.Moreover,thevicinityoftheAtlantic,andtheprevailingwestwind,madetheclimateofthisdistrictparticularlydamp.Thiswasevidentbythefertilityandabundanceofthepastureanditsdarkcolor.However,thecloudsremainedunbrokenforthepresent,andintheevening,afterabriskgallopoffortymiles,thehorsesstoppedonthebrinkofdeepCANADAS,immensenaturaltrenchesfilledwithwater.Noshelterwasnear,andponchoshadtoservebothfortentsandcoverletsaseachmanlaydownandfellasleepbeneaththethreateningsky.

           Nextdaythepresenceofwaterbecamestillmoresensiblyfelt;itseemedtoexudefromeveryporeoftheground.Soonlargeponds,somejustbeginningtoform,andsomealreadydeep,layacrosstheroutetotheeast.Aslongastheyhadonlytodealwithlagoons,circumscribedpiecesofwaterunencumberedwithaquaticplants,thehorsescouldgetthroughwellenough,butwhentheyencounteredmovingsloughscalledPENTANOS,itwasharderwork.
