Itwasaspectaclewhichcausedbothpleasureandpain,fornothingcouldbemorecuriousthantoseethesaidwater-spoutswanderingovertheplain,comingincontactandminglingwitheachother,andfallingandrisinginwildconfusion;but,ontheotherhand,nothingcouldbemoredisagreeablethanthedustwhichwasthrownoffbytheseinnumerableMEDANOS,whichwassoimpalpablethatcloseone’seyesastheymight,itfounditswaythroughthelids.
Thisphenomenonlastedthegreaterpartoftheday.Thetravelersmadegoodprogress,however,andaboutfouro’clocktheCordilleraslayfullfortymilesbehindthem,thedarkoutlinesbeingalreadyalmostlostintheeveningmists.Theywereallsomewhatfatiguedwiththejourney,andgladenoughtohaltforthenightonthebanksoftheNeuquem,calledRamid,orComoebycertaingeographers,atroubled,turbulentrapidflowingbetweenhighredbanks.
Noincidentofanyimportanceoccurredthatnightorthefollowingday.Theyrodewellandfast,findingthegroundfirm,andthetemperaturebearable.Towardnoon,however,thesun’srayswereextremelyscorching,andwheneveningcame,abarofcloudsstreakedthesouthwesthorizon—asuresignofachangeintheweather.ThePatagonianpointeditouttothegeographer,whoreplied:
"Yes,Iknow;"andturningtohiscompanions,added,"see,achangeofweatheriscoming!WearegoingtohaveatasteofPAMPERO."
AndhewentontoexplainthatthisPAMPEROisverycommonintheArgentineplains.Itisanextremelydrywindwhichblowsfromthesouthwest.
