           "Biddy,"saidI,afterbindinghertosecrecy,"Iwanttobeagentleman."

           "O,Iwouldn’t,ifIwasyou!"shereturned."Idon’tthinkitwouldanswer."

           "Biddy,"saidI,withsomeseverity,"Ihaveparticularreasonsforwantingtobeagentleman."

           "Youknowbest,Pip;butdon’tyouthinkyouarehappierasyouare?"

           "Biddy,"Iexclaimed,impatiently,"IamnotatallhappyasIam.Iamdisgustedwithmycallingandwithmylife.Ihavenevertakentoeither,sinceIwasbound.Don’tbeabsurd."

           "WasIabsurd?"saidBiddy,quietlyraisinghereyebrows;"Iamsorryforthat;Ididn’tmeantobe.Ionlywantyoutodowell,andtobecomfortable."

           "Well,then,understandonceforallthatInevershallorcanbecomfortableoranythingbutmiserablethere,Biddy!unlessIcanleadaverydifferentsortoflifefromthelifeIleadnow.
