Aftertwoorthreedays,whenIhadestablishedmyselfinmyroomandhadgonebackwardsandforwardstoLondonseveraltimes,andhadorderedallIwantedofmytradesmen,Mr.PocketandIhadalongtalktogether.HeknewmoreofmyintendedcareerthanIknewmyself,forhereferredtohishavingbeentoldbyMr.JaggersthatIwasnotdesignedforanyprofession,andthatIshouldbewellenougheducatedformydestinyifIcould"holdmyown"withtheaverageofyoungmeninprosperouscircumstances.Iacquiesced,ofcourse,knowingnothingtothecontrary.
HeadvisedmyattendingcertainplacesinLondon,fortheacquisitionofsuchmererudimentsasIwanted,andmyinvestinghimwiththefunctionsofexplaineranddirectorofallmystudies.HehopedthatwithintelligentassistanceIshouldmeetwithlittletodiscourageme,andshouldsoonbeabletodispensewithanyaidbuthis.Throughhiswayofsayingthis,andmuchmoretosimilarpurpose,heplacedhimselfonconfidentialtermswithmeinanadmirablemanner;andImaystateatoncethathewasalwayssozealousandhonorableinfulfillinghiscompactwithme,thathemademezealousandhonorableinfulfillingminewithhim.Ifhehadshownindifferenceasamaster,IhavenodoubtIshouldhavereturnedthecomplimentasapupil;hegavemenosuchexcuse,andeachofusdidtheotherjustice.NordidIeverregardhimashavinganythingludicrousabouthim—oranythingbutwhatwasserious,honest,andgood—inhistutorcommunicationwithme.
