           Irecalledthehopelesscircumstancesbywhichshehadbeensurroundedinthemiserablelittleshopandthemiserablelittlenoisyeveningschool,withthatmiserableoldbundleofincompetencealwaystobedraggedandshouldered.IreflectedthateveninthoseuntowardtimestheremusthavebeenlatentinBiddywhatwasnowdeveloping,for,inmyfirstuneasinessanddiscontentIhadturnedtoherforhelp,asamatterofcourse.Biddysatquietlysewing,sheddingnomoretears,andwhileIlookedatherandthoughtaboutitall,itoccurredtomethatperhapsIhadnotbeensufficientlygratefultoBiddy.Imighthavebeentooreserved,andshouldhavepatronizedhermore(thoughIdidnotusethatprecisewordinmymeditations)withmyconfidence.

           "Yes,Biddy,"Iobserved,whenIhaddoneturningitover,"youweremyfirstteacher,andthatatatimewhenwelittlethoughtofeverbeingtogetherlikethis,inthiskitchen."

           "Ah,poorthing!"repliedBiddy.Itwaslikeherself-forgetfulnesstotransfertheremarktomysister,andtogetupandbebusyabouther,makinghermorecomfortable;"that’ssadlytrue!"

           "Well!"saidI,"wemusttalktogetheralittlemore,asweusedtodo.AndImustconsultyoualittlemore,asIusedtodo.LetushaveaquietwalkonthemarshesnextSunday,Biddy,andalongchat."

           Mysisterwasneverleftalonenow;butJoemorethanreadilyundertookthecareofheronthatSundayafternoon,andBiddyandIwentouttogether.
