           Thereisakindofsleepthatstealsuponussometimes,which,whileitholdsthebodyprisoner,doesnotfreethemindfromasenseofthingsaboutit,andenableittorambleatitspleasure.Sofarasanoverpoweringheaviness,aprostrationofstrength,andanutterinabilitytocontrolourthoughtsorpowerofmotion,canbecalledsleep,thisisit;andyet,wehaveaconsciousnessofallthatisgoingonaboutus,and,ifwedreamatsuchatime,wordswhicharereallyspoken,orsoundswhichreallyexistatthemoment,accommodatethemselveswithsurprisingreadinesstoourvisions,untilrealityandimaginationbecomesostrangelyblendedthatitisafterwardsalmostmatterofimpossibilitytoseparatethetwo.Noristhis,themoststrikingphenomenonindcidentaltosuchastate.Itisanundoubtedfact,thatalthoughoursensesoftouchandsightbeforthetimedead,yetoursleepingthoughts,andthevisionaryscenesthatpassbeforeus,willbeinfluencedandmateriallyinfluenced,bytheMERESILENTPRESENCEofsomeexternalobject;whichmaynothavebeennearuswhenweclosedoureyes:andofwhosevicinitywehavehadnowakingconsciousness.
