           Theeventsnarratedinthelastchapterwereyetbuttwodaysold,whenOliverfoundhimself,atthreeo’clockintheafternoon,inatravelling-carriagerollingfasttowardshisnativetown.Mrs.Maylie,andRose,andMrs.Bedwin,andthegooddoctorwerewithhim:andMr.Brownlowfollowedinapost-chaise,accompaniedbyoneotherpersonwhosenamehadnotbeenmentioned.

           Theyhadnottalkedmuchupontheway;forOliverwasinaflutterofagitationanduncertaintywhichdeprivedhimofthepowerofcollectinghisthoughts,andalmostofspeech,andappearedtohavescarcelylesseffectonhiscompanions,whosharedit,inatleastanequaldegree.HeandthetwoladieshadbeenverycarefullymadeacquaintedbyMr.BrownlowwiththenatureoftheadmissionswhichhadbeenforcedfromMonks;andalthoughtheyknewthattheobjectoftheirpresentjourneywastocompletetheworkwhichhadbeensowellbegun,stillthewholematterwasenvelopedinenoughofdoubtandmysterytoleavetheminenduranceofthemostintensesuspense.

           Thesamekindfriendhad,withMr.Losberne’sassistance,cautiouslystoppedallchannelsofcommunicationthroughwhichtheycouldreceiveintelligenceofthedreadfuloccurrencesthatsorecentlytakenplace.‘Itwasquitetrue,’hesaid,‘thattheymustknowthembeforelong,butitmightbeatabettertimethanthepresent,anditcouldnotbeataworse.
