           Itwasacheerlessmorningwhentheygotintothestreet;blowingandraininghard;andthecloudslookingdullandstormy.Thenighthadbeenverywet:largepoolsofwaterhadcollectedintheroad:andthekennelswereoverflowing.Therewasafaintglimmeringofthecomingdayinthesky;butitratheraggrevatedthanrelievedthegloomofthescene:thesombrelightonlyservingtopalethatwhichthestreetlampsafforded,withoutsheddinganywarmerorbrightertintsuponthewethouse-tops,anddrearystreets.Thereappearedtobenobodystirringinthatquarterofthetown;thewindowsofthehouseswereallcloselyshut;andthestreetsthroughwhichtheypassed,werenoiselessandempty.

           BythetimetheyhadturnedintotheBethnalGreenRoad,thedayhadfairlybeguntobreak.Manyofthelampswerealreadyextinguished;afewcountrywaggonswereslowlytoilingon,towardsLondon;nowandthen,astage-coach,coveredwithmud,rattledbrisklyby:thedriverbestowing,ashepassed,andadmonitorylashupontheheavywaggonerwho,bykeepingonthewrongsideoftheroad,hadendangeredhisarrivingattheoffice,aquarterofaminuteafterhistime.Thepublic-houses,withgas-lightsburninginside,werealreadyopen.Bydegrees,othershopsbegantobeunclosed,andafewscatteredpeopleweremetwith.
