           Then,camestragglinggroupsoflabourersgoingtotheirwork;then,menandwomenwithfish-basketsontheirheads;donkey-cartsladenwithvegetables;chaise-cartsfilledwithlive-stockorwholecarcassesofmeat;milk-womenwithpails;anunbrokenconcourseofpeople,trudgingoutwithvarioussuppliestotheeasternsuburbsofthetown.AstheyapproachedtheCity,thenoiseandtrafficgraduallyincreased;whentheythreadedthestreetsbetweenShoreditchandSmithfield,ithadswelledintoaroarofsoundandbustle.Itwasaslightasitwaslikelytobe,tillnightcameonagain,andthebusymorningofhalftheLondonpopulationhadbegun.
