           Thetwilightwasbeginningtoclosein,whenMr.Brownlowalightedfromahackney-coachathisowndoor,andknockedsoftly.Thedoorbeingopened,asturdymangotoutofthecoachandstationedhimselfononesideofthesteps,whileanotherman,whohadbeenseatedonthebox,dismountedtoo,andstoodupontheotherside.AtasignfromMr.Brownlow,theyhelpedoutathirdman,andtakinghimbetweenthem,hurriedhimintothehouse.ThismanwasMonks.

           Theywalkedinthesamemannerupthestairswithoutspeaking,andMr.Brownlow,precedingthem,ledthewayintoaback-room.Atthedoorofthisapartment,Monks,whohadascendedwithevidentreluctance,stopped.Thetwomenlookedattheoldgentlemanasifforinstructions.
