           AlthoughIdonotmeantoassertthatitisusuallythepracticeofrenownedandlearnedsages,toshortentheroadtoanygreatconclusion(theircourseindeedbeingrathertolengthenthedistance,byvariouscircumlocationsanddiscursivestaggerings,likeuntothoseinwhichdrunkenmenunderthepressureofatoomightyflowofideas,arepronetoindulge);still,Idomeantosay,anddosaydistinctly,thatitistheinvariablepracticeofmanymightyphilosophers,incarryingouttheirtheories,toevincegreatwisdomandforesightinprovidingagainsteverypossiblecontingencywhichcanbesupposedatalllikelytoaffectthemselves.Thus,todoagreatright,youmaydoalittlewrong;andyoumaytakeanymeanswhichtheendtobeattained,willjustify;theamountoftheright,ortheamountofthewrong,orindeedthedistinctionbetweenthetwo,beingleftentirelytothephilosopherconcerned,tobesettledanddeterminedbyhisclear,comprehensive,andimpartialviewofhisownparticularcase.
