           Brownlow’spersonalproperty,ashasbeenalreadydescribed,theywereactuatedbyaverylaudableandbecomingregardforthemselves;andforasmuchasthefreedomofthesubjectandthelibertyoftheindividualareamongthefirstandproudestboastsofatrue-heartedEnglishman,so,Ineedhardlybegthereadertoobserve,thatthisactionshouldtendtoexaltthemintheopinionofallpublicandpatrioticmen,inalmostasgreatadegreeasthisstrongproofoftheiranxietyfortheirownpreservationandsafetygoestocorroborateandconfirmthelittlecodeoflawswhichcertainprofoundandsound-judgingphilosophershavelaiddownasthemain-springsofallNature’sdeedsandactions:thesaidphilosophersverywiselyreducingthegoodlady’sproceedingstomattersofmaximandtheory:and,byaveryneatandprettycomplimenttoherexaltedwisdomandunderstanding,puttingentirelyoutofsightanyconsiderationsofheart,orgenerousimpulseandfeeling.For,thesearematterstotallybeneathafemalewhoisacknowledgedbyuniversaladmissiontobefarabovethenumerouslittlefoiblesandweaknessesofhersex.

           IfIwantedanyfurtherproofofthestrictlyphilosophicalnatureoftheconductoftheseyounggentlemenintheirverydelicatepredicament,Ishouldatoncefinditinthefact(alsorecordedinaforegoingpartofthisnarrative),oftheirquittingthepursuit,whenthegeneralattentionwasfixeduponOliver;andmakingimmediatelyfortheirhomebytheshortestpossiblecut.
