Theyweregettingonrapidly,whensuddenlyacrywasheardintheinteriorofthetemple,followedalmostinstantlybyothercriesreplyingfromtheoutside. Passepartoutandtheguidestopped.Hadtheybeenheard?Wasthealarmbeinggiven?Commonprudenceurgedthemtoretire,andtheydidso,followedbyPhileasFoggandSirFrancis. Theyagainhidthemselvesinthewood,andwaitedtillthedisturbance,whateveritmightbe,ceased,holdingthemselvesreadytoresumetheirattemptwithoutdelay. But,awkwardlyenough,theguardsnowappearedattherearofthetemple,andthereinstalledthemselves,inreadinesstopreventasurprise.
Itwouldbedifficulttodescribethedisappointmentoftheparty,thusinterruptedintheirwork. Theycouldnotnowreachthevictim;how,then,couldtheysaveher?SirFrancisshookhisfists,Passepartoutwasbesidehimself,andtheguidegnashedhisteethwithrage. ThetranquilFoggwaited,withoutbetrayinganyemotion.
"Wehavenothingtodobuttogoaway,"whisperedSirFrancis.
