Stillrefused.Passepartoutjumpedateachadvance;buttheIndiandeclinedtobetempted.Yettheofferwasanalluringone,for,supposingittooktheelephantfifteenhourstoreachAllahabad,hisownerwouldreceivenolessthansixhundredpoundssterling.
PhileasFogg,withoutgettingintheleastflurried,thenproposedtopurchasetheanimaloutright,andatfirstofferedathousandpoundsforhim.TheIndian,perhapsthinkinghewasgoingtomakeagreatbargain,stillrefused.
SirFrancisCromartytookMr.Foggaside,andbeggedhimtoreflectbeforehewentanyfurther;towhichthatgentlemanrepliedthathewasnotinthehabitofactingrashly,thatabetoftwentythousandpoundswasatstake,thattheelephantwasabsolutelynecessarytohim,andthathewouldsecurehimifhehadtopaytwentytimeshisvalue. ReturningtotheIndian,whosesmall,sharpeyes,glisteningwithavarice,betrayedthatwithhimitwasonlyaquestionofhowgreatapricehecouldobtain.
