PhileasFoggdidnotreplyatonce;butFix,havingpointedouttheman,whowaswalkingupanddowninfrontofthestation,Mr.Foggwentuptohim.Aninstantafter,Mr.FoggandtheAmerican,whosenamewasMudge,enteredahutbuiltjustbelowthefort.

NotwishingtoexposeAoudatothediscomfortsoftravellingintheopenair,Mr.FoggproposedtoleaveherwithPassepartoutatFortKearney,theservanttakinguponhimselftoescorthertoEuropebyabetterrouteandundermorefavourableconditions.ButAoudarefusedtoseparatefromMr.Fogg,andPassepartoutwasdelightedwithherdecision;fornothingcouldinducehimtoleavehismasterwhileFixwaswithhim.
