           Aouda,leaninguponMr.Fogg’sarm,observedthetumultuousscenewithsurprise,whileFixaskedamannearhimwhatthecauseofitallwas.Beforethemancouldreply,afreshagitationarose;hurrahsandexcitedshoutswereheard;thestaffsofthebannersbegantobeusedasoffensiveweapons;andfistsflewaboutineverydirection.Thumpswereexchangedfromthetopsofthecarriagesandomnibuseswhichhadbeenblockedupinthecrowd.Bootsandshoeswentwhirlingthroughtheair,andMr.Foggthoughtheevenheardthecrackofrevolversminglinginthedin,theroutapproachedthestairway,andflowedoverthelowerstep.Oneofthepartieshadevidentlybeenrepulsed;butthemerelookers-oncouldnottellwhetherMandiboyorCamerfieldhadgainedtheupperhand.
