Thestreetswerecrowdedwithpeople.Priestswerepassinginprocessions,beatingtheirdrearytambourines;policeandcustom-houseofficerswithpointedhatsencrustedwithlacandcarryingtwosabreshungtotheirwaists;soldiers,cladinbluecottonwithwhitestripes,andbearingguns;theMikado’sguards,envelopedinsilkendoubles,hauberksandcoatsofmail;andnumbersofmilitaryfolkofallranks—forthemilitaryprofessionisasmuchrespectedinJapanasitisdespisedinChina—wenthitherandthitheringroupsandpairs.Passepartoutsaw,too,beggingfriars,long-robedpilgrims,andsimplecivilians,withtheirwarpedandjet-blackhair,bigheads,longbusts,slenderlegs,shortstature,andcomplexionsvaryingfromcopper-colourtoadeadwhite,butneveryellow,liketheChinese,fromwhomtheJapanesewidelydiffer.
