Passepartout,whohadbeenpurchasingseveraldozenmangoes—afruitaslargeasgood-sizedapples,ofadark-browncolouroutsideandabrightredwithin,andwhosewhitepulp,meltinginthemouth,affordsgourmandsadelicioussensation—waswaitingforthemondeck.HewasonlytoogladtooffersomemangoestoAouda,whothankedhimverygracefullyforthem.
Ateleveno’clocktheRangoonrodeoutofSingaporeharbour,andinafewhoursthehighmountainsofMalacca,withtheirforests,inhabitedbythemostbeautifully-furredtigersintheworld,werelosttoview.SingaporeisdistantsomethirteenhundredmilesfromtheislandofHongKong,whichisalittleEnglishcolonyneartheChinesecoast.PhileasFogghopedtoaccomplishthejourneyinsixdays,soastobeintimeforthesteamerwhichwouldleaveonthe6thofNovemberforYokohama,theprincipalJapaneseport.
TheRangoonhadalargequotaofpassengers,manyofwhomdisembarkedatSingapore,amongthemanumberofIndians,Ceylonese,Chinamen,Malays,andPortuguese,mostlysecond-classtravellers.
Theweather,whichhadhithertobeenfine,changedwiththelastquarterofthemoon.Thesearolledheavily,andthewindatintervalsrosealmosttoastorm,buthappilyblewfromthesouth-west,andthusaidedthesteamer’sprogress.Thecaptainasoftenaspossibleputuphissails,andunderthedoubleactionofsteamandsailthevesselmaderapidprogressalongthecoastsofAnamandCochinChina.
