Thetownextendsalongalowandmarshylevel,betweentwohills.Animmensebedoflavaboundsitononeside,andfallsgentlytowardsthesea.OntheotherextendsthevastbayofFaxa,shutinatthenorthbytheenormousglacieroftheSnæfell,andofwhichtheValkyriawasforthetimetheonlyoccupant.UsuallytheEnglishandFrenchconservatorsoffisheriesmoorinthisbay,butjustthentheywerecruisingaboutthewesterncoastsoftheisland.
ThelongestoftheonlytwostreetsthatRejkiavikpossesseswasparallelwiththebeach.Herelivethemerchantsandtraders,inwoodencabinsmadeofredplankssethorizontally;theotherstreet,runningwest,endsatthelittlelakebetweenthehouseofthebishopandothernon-commercialpeople.
Ihadsoonexploredthesemelancholyways;hereandthereIgotaglimpseoffadedturf,lookinglikeaworn-outbitofcarpet,orsomeappearanceofakitchengarden,thesparsevegetablesofwhich(potatoes,cabbages,andlettuces),wouldhavefiguredappropriatelyuponaLilliputiantable.Afewsicklywallflowersweretryingtoenjoytheairandsunshine.
Aboutthemiddleofthetin-commercialstreetIfoundthepubliccemetery,inclosedwithamudwall,andwherethereseemedplentyofroom.
ThenafewstepsbroughtmetotheGovernor’shouse,abutcomparedwiththetownhallofHamburg,apalaceincomparisonwiththecabinsoftheIcelandicpopulation.
