Thewindwasunfavourabletoaspeciesoflaunchnotcalculatedforshallowwater.Inmanyplaceswewereobligedtopushourselvesalongwithiron-pointedsticks.Oftenthesunkenrocksjustbeneaththesurfaceobligedustodeviatefromourstraightcourse.Atlast,afterthreehours’sailing,aboutsixintheeveningwereachedaplacesuitableforourlanding.Ijumpedashore,followedbymyuncleandtheIcelander.Thisshortpassagehadnotservedtocoolmyardour.Onthecontrary,Ievenproposedtoburn‘ourship,’topreventthepossibilityofreturn;butmyunclewouldnotconsenttothat.Ithoughthimsingularlylukewarm.
