Thismightuptoacertainpointexplaintheexistenceofanoceanfortyleaguesbeneaththesurfaceoftheglobe.Butinmyopinionthisliquidmasswouldbelostbydegreesfartherandfartherwithintheinterioroftheearth,anditcertainlyhaditsorigininthewatersoftheoceanoverhead,whichhadmadetheirwayhitherthroughsomefissure.Yetitmustbebelievedthatthatfissureisnowclosed,andthatallthiscavernorimmensereservoirwasfilledinaveryshorttime.Perhapseventhiswater,subjectedtothefierceactionofcentralheat,hadpartlybeenresolvedintovapour.
