SuchwasthesuccessionofphenomenawhichproducedIceland,allarisingfromtheactionofinternalfire;andtosupposethatthemasswithindidnotstillexistinastateofliquidincandescencewasabsurd;andnothingcouldsurpasstheabsurdityoffancyingthatitwaspossibletoreachtheearth’scentre.
SoIfeltalittlecomfortedasweadvancedtotheassaultofSnæfell.
Thewaywasgrowingmoreandmorearduous,theascentsteeperandsteeper;theloosefragmentsofrocktrembledbeneathus,andtheutmostcarewasneededtoavoiddangerousfalls.
Hanswentonasquietlyasifhewereonlevelground;sometimeshedisappearedaltogetherbehindthehugeblocks,thenashrillwhistlewoulddirectusonourwaytohim.Sometimeshewouldhalt,pickupafewbitsofstone,buildthemupintoarecognisableform,andthusmadelandmarkstoguideusinourwayback.Averywiseprecautioninitself,but,asthingsturnedout,quiteuseless.
Threehours’fatiguingmarchhadonlybroughtustothebaseofthemountain.ThereHansbiduscometoahalt,andahastybreakfastwasservedout.Myuncleswallowedtwomouthfulsatatimetogetonfaster.But,whetherhelikeditornot,thiswasarestaswellasabreakfasthourandhehadtowaittillitpleasedourguidetomoveon,whichcametopassinanhour.ThethreeIcelanders,justastaciturnastheircomradethehunted,neverspoke,andatetheirbreakfastsinsilence.
