           YetMatthewwishedtokeepher,ofallunaccountablethings!Marillafeltthathewanteditjustasmuchthismorningashehadthenightbefore,andthathewouldgoonwantingit.ThatwasMatthew’sway—takeawhimintohisheadandclingtoitwiththemostamazingsilentpersistency—apersistencytentimesmorepotentandeffectualinitsverysilencethanifhehadtalkeditout.

           WhenthemealwasendedAnnecameoutofherreverieandofferedtowashthedishes.

           “Canyouwashdishesright?”askedMarilladistrustfully.

           “Prettywell.I’mbetteratlookingafterchildren,though.I’vehadsomuchexperienceatthat.It’ssuchapityyouhaven’tanyhereformetolookafter.”

           “Idon’tfeelasifIwantedanymorechildrentolookafterthanI’vegotatpresent.You’reproblemenoughinallconscience.What’stobedonewithyouIdon’tknow.Matthewisamostridiculousman.”

           “Ithinkhe’slovely,”saidAnnereproachfully.“Heissoverysympathetic.Hedidn’tmindhowmuchItalked—heseemedtolikeit.IfeltthathewasakindredspiritassoonaseverIsawhim.
