           Forreasonsbestknowntoherself,MarilladidnottellAnnethatshewastostayatGreenGablesuntilthenextafternoon.Duringtheforenoonshekeptthechildbusywithvarioustasksandwatchedoverherwithakeeneyewhileshedidthem.BynoonshehadconcludedthatAnnewassmartandobedient,willingtoworkandquicktolearn;hermostseriousshortcomingseemedtobeatendencytofallintodaydreamsinthemiddleofataskandforgetallaboutituntilsuchtimeasshewassharplyrecalledtoearthbyareprimandoracatastrophe.

           WhenAnnehadfinishedwashingthedinnerdishesshesuddenlyconfrontedMarillawiththeairandexpressionofonedesperatelydeterminedtolearntheworst.Herthinlittlebodytrembledfromheadtofoot;herfaceflushedandhereyesdilateduntiltheywerealmostblack;sheclaspedherhandstightlyandsaidinanimploringvoice:

           “Oh,please,MissCuthbert,won’tyoutellmeifyouaregoingtosendmeawayornot?I’vetriedtobepatientallthemorning,butIreallyfeelthatIcannotbearnotknowinganylonger.It’sadreadfulfeeling.Pleasetellme.”

           “Youhaven’tscaldedthedishclothincleanhotwaterasItoldyoutodo,”saidMarillaimmovably.“Justgoanddoitbeforeyouaskanymorequestions,Anne.”

           Annewentandattendedtothedishcloth.ThenshereturnedtoMarillaandfastenedimploringeyesofthelatter’sface.“Well,”saidMarilla,unabletofindanyexcusefordeferringherexplanationlonger,“IsupposeImightaswelltellyou.
