           MatthewCuthbertandthesorrelmarejoggedcomfortablyovertheeightmilestoBrightRiver.Itwasaprettyroad,runningalongbetweensnugfarmsteads,withnowandagainabitofbalsamyfirwoodtodrivethroughorahollowwherewildplumshungouttheirfilmybloom.Theairwassweetwiththebreathofmanyappleorchardsandthemeadowsslopedawayinthedistancetohorizonmistsofpearlandpurple;while

           “Thelittlebirdssangasifitwere

           Theonedayofsummerinalltheyear.”

           

           Matthewenjoyedthedriveafterhisownfashion,exceptduringthemomentswhenhemetwomenandhadtonodtothem—forinPrinceEdwardislandyouaresupposedtonodtoallandsundryyoumeetontheroadwhetheryouknowthemornot.

           MatthewdreadedallwomenexceptMarillaandMrs.Rachel;hehadanuncomfortablefeelingthatthemysteriouscreaturesweresecretlylaughingathim.Hemayhavebeenquiterightinthinkingso,forhewasanodd-lookingpersonage,withanungainlyfigureandlongiron-grayhairthattouchedhisstoopingshoulders,andafull,softbrownbeardwhichhehadworneversincehewastwenty.Infact,hehadlookedattwentyverymuchashelookedatsixty,lackingalittleofthegrayness.

           WhenhereachedBrightRivertherewasnosignofanytrain;hethoughthewastooearly,sohetiedhishorseintheyardofthesmallBrightRiverhotelandwentovertothestationhouse.Thelongplatformwasalmostdeserted;theonlylivingcreatureinsightbeingagirlwhowassittingonapileofshinglesattheextremeend.
