           Therewasnogainsayingthevalueofthis.Everybodyinthecompanyrealisedthatshehadgotastart.Carriehuggedherselfwhennexteveningthelinesgotthesameapplause.Shewenthomerejoicing,knowingthatsoonsomethingmustcomeofit.ItwasHurstwoodwho,byhispresence,causedhermerrythoughtstofleeandreplacedthemwithsharplongingsforanendofdistress.

           Thenextdaysheaskedhimabouthisventure.

           “They’renottryingtorunanycarsexceptwithpolice.Theydon’twantanybodyjustnow—notbeforenextweek.”

           Nextweekcame,butCarriesawnochange.Hurstwoodseemedmoreapatheticthanever.Hesawheroffmorningstorehearsalsandthelikewiththeutmostcalm.Hereadandread.Severaltimeshefoundhimselfstaringatanitem,butthinkingofsomethingelse.Thefirstoftheselapsesthathesharplynoticedconcernedahilariouspartyhehadonceattendedatadrivingclub,ofwhichhehadbeenamember.
